AGGREGATE

Small white aggregates may migrate to the surface during the brick pavers manufacturer’s production, usually not larger than ¼” in diameter. This aggregate is necessary in the production process to maintain the brick pavers strength levels.

PAVERS COLOR VARIATIONS

Occurs during the brick pavers manufacturing process and is very common due to differences in the manufacturers’ raw materials. Brick paver colors will vary for this reason.

PITTING

Small pits may form in pavers while concrete is curing, usually not larger than ¼” in diameter, and is a common occurrence in the brick paver manufacturers’ process.

CHIPS AND CRACKS

“Stress Cracks” are infrequent but may occur. They are superficial and will not be a factor in the performance of the paver brick. Minor chips and cracks are incidental to the usual method of manufacturing or handling, resulting from customary methods of shipping and paver brick installation and shall not be deemed grounds for replacement.

WEEDS

Weeds may grow from seeds that work their way into the sand joints. This can be remedied by pulling or spraying weed killer. Sealing paver brick is a very effective way to address this situation and inhibit weed growth.

EFFLORESENCE

Effloresence: a white deposit of calcium carbonate on concrete pavers and concrete surfaces.

It results from the reaction of calcium hydroxide with carbon dioxide from the air.

The calcium hydroxide remains on the surface, reacts with carbon dioxide, which forms calcium carbonate and water. Slight efflorescence will dissipate over time.

JOINT SAND

Joints will be filled with sand after the installation of the pavers. For the pavers’ filler sand to serve its function of holding the paver bricks together tightly it only needs to be halfway up the interlocking pavers. Extreme water runoff, heavy rains or direct pressure will cause the filler sand to dissipate. This can be remedied by re-sanding with dry sand if necessary. Specialized epoxy sand can be installed with some pavers to create a solid grout joint at an additional charge.

CLEANING

There are a multitude of brick paver cleaners. Common stains such as mold, mildew, dirt or tire tracks may be cleaned with water and a non-metallic scrub brush. General household cleaners such as scouring powder or diluted bleach may be used if applied carefully. A small test area should be cleaned first to insure the cleaning products are not damaging to the paver bricks. For tough stains, commercial cleaners may be needed or replacement of the stained brick paver may be necessary. Any cleaner used should be diluted 4 to 1 (water to chemical). It is a good idea to seek professional advice prior to application of any sort of brick paver cleaner or maintenance product. Pressure washing the paver brick may result in loss of warranty on your paver brick installation if performed improperly due to blasting sand from the joints.

***NOTE: COMMERCIAL TIRE CARE PRODUCTS, SUCH AS ARMOR-ALL, WILL CAUSE STAINS AND/OR DISCOLORATION TO PAVER BRICK COLORS. THESE PRODUCTS SHOULD NOT BE USED ON THE SURFACE OF THE PAVER DRIVEWAY OR ANY OTHER HARDSCAPE SURFACE***

SEALERS

After installing pavers, consider the many functional and aesthetic advantages to applying a quality concrete sealer to your hardscape surface by a professional paving contractor:

1) Protection from stain penetrations upon the brick pavers surface
2) Protection from unwanted insects and vegetation growth between the brick pavers
3) Stabilization of joint sand installed between the concrete pavers

Paver sealer is not a magical cure-all. Replacement or cleaning of your driveway pavers, patio pavers, sidewalk pavers or swimming pool deck pavers should be done prior to any brick paver sealer application. The proper sealers must be used and applied by a trained professional to avoid costly brick restoration due to improper application of the paver sealant product.
